Founder, Canna Heals

Hi, I’m Dr. Paulette Simone Smith, MS, LCSW-C

Living with a chronic illness isn’t just about managing symptoms—it’s about fighting to reclaim your quality of life. I know this journey firsthand. After struggling with debilitating ulcerative colitis, I found relief through cannabis therapy when traditional pharmaceuticals weren’t enough. That experience changed everything.

It led me to work directly with patients as a Patient Advisor, deepening my understanding of how cannabis could help others. But I quickly realized something was missing—education. Too many people were left to navigate the world of medical cannabis on their own. So, in 2021, I founded Canna Heals to fill that gap, ensuring patients and consumers get the knowledge they need to make informed choices about their health and wellness.

Why Cannabis Education?

Cannabis use has seen a substantial rise in recent years. In 2022, approximately 61.8 million Americans reported using marijuana in the past year, with 17.7 million using it daily or nearly daily (Statista, 2023; AP News, 2023). As more people turn to cannabis for medical and recreational use, the need for comprehensive education becomes even more critical. Without proper guidance, consumers may struggle to navigate the complexities of cannabis products, dosages, and potential health risks. Alongside increased use, emergency department visits related to cannabis have also risen. Conditions such as cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome (CHS), which causes severe nausea and vomiting, have become more prevalent and are now a leading cause of marijuana-related ER visits (UCHealth, 2023).

Additionally, approximately three in ten cannabis users may develop cannabis use disorder, emphasizing the need for education on responsible use and harm reduction (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2023). The cannabis industry is rapidly evolving, introducing new products such as edibles, concentrates, and topicals. While these innovations provide alternative consumption methods, they also introduce new challenges. For instance, edibles can take longer to produce effects, increasing the likelihood of overconsumption and adverse reactions (EatingWell, 2023). Educating consumers about these nuances ensures safer use and reduces the risk of unintended consequences.

Beyond personal health and safety, cannabis education is also crucial for breaking the stigma surrounding the plant. Misinformation and outdated narratives continue to fuel misconceptions, which can hinder access to cannabis for those who need it most. By promoting accurate, science-based knowledge, we can challenge these biases, encourage informed discussions, and support social justice efforts aimed at addressing the historical and systemic harms of cannabis prohibition.
